Incredible incident at Ajax – Arsenal: the focus was 10 cm smaller
In the women’s Champions League clash between Ajax and Arsenal, the London club went through it and found that the goalposts were 10cm shorter than expected.
Ajax and Arsenal met in the qualifiers for the Women’s Champions League and in the final the Londoners won twice, both in substance and impressions.
Notable because they won 1-0 in the second leg of the two teams and secured a ticket to the group stage of the top European club competition (2-2 result in the first leg), and Impressions because they noticed an unusual… irregularity is and made sure to show them off.
This affected the goalposts at “Sportcomplex De Toekomst”, with Arsenal players noting during their warm-up that the goalposts were smaller than those required by UEFA and upon inspection finding that the goalposts were actually 10cm lower.
“It was a very strange experience playing against a big club like Ajax and having to measure the dimensions of the goalposts before the game started.
To be honest, I’ve never experienced anything like this. It was all very strange.” said Arsenal manager Jonas Eideval after the game.
