Champions League
OFFICIALLY. Sevilla coach Lopetegui sacked
Spanish Sevilla sack head coach Julen Lopetegui’s photo.
The team was unsuccessful in the Champions League 3rd round match against Borussia Dortmund (1:4) and only scored 1 point in three group matches.
In La Liga, Sevilla is in 17th place with only 5 points at the end of 7 weeks.
Lopetegui has been coaching the team since June 2019 and led his team to the 2019/20 Europa League victory.
Now the Spanish “Seville” can lead the Argentinean expert Jorge Sampaoli.
Julen Lopetegui said after the game: “The President and Vice President have confirmed that I am no longer the manager of Sevilla. It has been three impressive historic years with a silver medal and three consecutive Champions League qualifiers.
We started this season badly and they made a decision that I had to make, even though I didn’t like it. I must express my gratitude to the people who brought me here: Monchi, the board, my players, all our fans, because you have helped me achieve what we have achieved.
I will never forget the fans who always say my name, it will be one of my best memories. The fans are smart, they are the most important part of the club. And they know what has happened in recent years.
I have mixed feelings, but the main thing is that I’m grateful and I don’t want to think negative thoughts. Staying here means I will always have strong feelings towards this club and our city and put up with it with my family.
As for the match, we were lacking both offensively and defensively. Although we were more nervous in the second half, we found goals and then gave up again. Calmness is key.”
