Atlético “hammered” Simon Mignolet’s home goal, which was saved several times by VAR, in the end Brugge held 0-0, remained unbeaten in the second group of the Champions League and qualified for the round of 16.

Atlético managed to take points away from them Brugesbut the hammering in Madrid ended in one 0-0 that puts the Belgians in the knockout stages of the Champions League and the Rojiblancos in the fray 2nd group.

Diego Simeone’s men went on the pitch motivated to do what they failed to do in the 1st round game a week ago when they missed chances but kept clean (and lost 2-0).

The pressure was constant and Angel Correa and Antoine Griezmann, who formed the top duo in the Argentine coach’s 4-4-2, created multiple phases.

Simon Mignolet was there and when he didn’t make it, there was the… umpire. Atletico put the ball in the net but the goal was disallowed for offside.

The medal had a different side in the 41st minute when Tajor Buchanan fell in phase with Nauel Molina in the penalty area and the referee awarded a penalty. VAR warned him to re-watch the phase and found via VIDEO the Canada striker had stepped on his opponent’s leg and slid onto the turf.

The 2nd half began with the hosts resuming their game, who missed a double chance in Griezmann and Correa and scored again, the goal not counting for Correa’s offside. In the 60th minute, Simeone initiated the substitution with Rodrigo de Paul, Alvaro Morata and Yannick Carrasco, a little later he brought on Mateusz Kunia and Axel Witsel and left Joao Felix on the bench in irritation.

The Spaniards continued to squander chances, culminating in Morata’s volley from inside the box that sent the ball to the head of a subdued Mignolet. The Belgians were down a player in the 82nd minute due to Kamal Sogua’s suspension, but eventually withstood the siege and, despite losing the first few points, remained comfortably top of the table and secured the ‘ticket’ for the next phase.
