Outrageous: Even in a film, the final between Atletico Madrid and Leverkusen cannot be described in words
Shock and awe in Madrid as the referee blows the final whistle, awarding a post-match penalty and drenching Atletico in one of the craziest sequences in Champions League history.
What happened on Wednesday evening (October 26th) in Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano doesn’t even happen in the cinema. It cannot be described in words. You can’t believe such a story if you don’t see what really happened in the match between Atletico and Leverkusen on matchday 5 of the UEFA Champions League.
The referee blew the whistle when the score was 2-2, but seconds later decided to check the final phase for a possible penalty. He went to VAR and gave Atlético the game over (!), only Yannick Carrasco got the penalty spot, shot over Hratetzki, Saul Niguez took the “attack rebound”, sent the ball to the crossbar and the hosts got a third chance. Reinaldo was in the right position but fired at Carrasco to miss the ball and put the Spaniards out of contention.
