Maccabi Haifa – Benfica 1-6: The Eagles at 90+2′ unbelievably stole the top of Group 8 from Paris

A crazy game took place in Israel, Benfica defeated Maccabi Haifa 6-1 and ousted Paris from first place in the group which beat Juventus 2-1.

Benfica swept against Maccabi Haifa. The Eagles, with Odysseus Vlachodemos under their rafters, beat the Israelis 6-1. With Mario’s “golden” goal at 90+2, in the seventh duel they defeated Paris (best away attack), who defeated Juventus 2-1 and moved up to first place in the table.


The game started at high speed and both teams had chances. In the 9th minute Benfica had a crossbar after a close-range shot by Gonzalo Ramos. In fact, the eagles found their way into the net in the 20th minute. Otamendi headed to Ramos, who scored.


At 23′ the referee, after checking the situation on the monitor, showed a penalty in favor of the home team for Silva’s hand. Seri took charge of the execution and tied the match.

At the beginning of the second half, Benfica managed to take control again. Ba crossed from the right and Moussa headed into the middle of the box and scored. The Eagles “secured” their victory in the 69th minute with a direct free kick from Grimaldo.

The Eagles were unstoppable, running even higher up the scoreboard in pursuit of goal difference. In 73′ Neres stole, passed to Rafa Silva, who slotted the ball in to make it 4-1 for Eagles.

Araujo made it 5-1 in the 88th minute, while Joao Mario gave the Eagles first place in the 90th + 2nd minute with a shot from outside the penalty area. After the final whistle, the Benfica players celebrated as they also learned the result of the match against Torino.
