THAT Salzburg prepared for the upset but eventually settled for a draw 1-1 with Bayern in Austria for the first game of the round of 16 of the Champions League. The Austrians had a better image in the match but Kingsle Koman stole the win from them in the 90′.

A goal from Austria’s forced substitution, Tsukubuike Andamou, in the 21st minute was not enough to win against Bayern, who seemed unable to come together in the league against Bochum from the foursome. Still, a close game from the French winger eventually leveled the score for the pair who will end up with an outright winner on March 8 in Munich.

Julian Nagelsmann provided all weapons offensively, perhaps to compensate for defensive absences like Manuel Neuer, Alfonso Davis and Leon Gorecka. Dayot Upamekano had to stay on the bench because of his poor performance against Bochum. Also, the youngest coach of the German home team, Matthias Jaisle (33, a year younger than Nagelsmann), once again relied on the fire of Karim Adegemi (a product of the Bayern academies, who have agreed to go to Dortmund in the summer) and Noah Oka.

The latter was injured in the 12th minute and was replaced by Andamou, a forced change that proved to be favorable for Salzburg. In the 21st minute, the gaps in Bayern’s defense through the stopper trio and Kingsle Koman and Serge Gnabri, who had the whole team, brought a situation of 3 against 3. The ball reached Adamou, who beat Sven Ulreich by one place to 1:0.

In November 2020, in the respective game in the “Red Bull Arena” for the group phase, Salzburg took the lead early on, but then conceded six goals. If one team seemed capable of scoring again, it was Salzburg. There was no reaction from the guests, but the gaps in the back remained. The slow Niklas Zille fought many battles to stop Salzburg’s fast attackers and finally escaped a near-penalty kick in 44′ (after the phase was checked by the VAR).

In the second half, the ball stayed even more at the feet of the Bayern players, but didn’t come close to Philip Ken’s home game. Salzburg’s players always came out first on the ball, which often resulted in them stealing the “bite” before Bayern’s players fired or blocked the shot.

The two coaches changed too late in the 2nd half and the picture stayed the same until the last 20 minutes. A very good moment from Leroy Sane (saved by Philippe Ken) for Bayern and a double chance from Adegemi and Andamou (repelled by Ulrich and Benjamin Pavar) livened the game up a bit.

The last ten minutes of the game had a lot of tension between the players, tough markings and Salzburg’s defense with all players behind the ball to hold the score. He didn’t succeed, because when Niklas Zille lifted the ball in the 90′, Thomas Miller got the first header, Koman made it 1-1 and gave an appointment in three weeks for the qualification.
