Catapult for UEFA the conclusion of the committee for the Champions League final: “The thousands of fans without tickets are a lie”
The verdict of the commission convened to investigate the causes of the chaos in the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid was a major blow to UEFA, with the European federation seen as the main culprit.
After an eight-month investigation into the causes that caused absolute chaos in front of the “Stade de France” between Liverpool and Real ahead of the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real, the conclusion came that gave fans moral justification while embarrassing European football’s federation.
Because the conclusion of the commission set up by UEFA itself to investigate the case speaks of a “primary responsibility” of the organizer for the failure to organize the final and the safety of the spectators.
The report focuses on the conclusion that UEFA has “marginalised” its own security and law enforcement unit, headed by Željko Pavlica, a close friend of UEFA President Aleksandar Ceferin, in its home country of Slovenia.
The report also categorically rejects claims, persistently made by UEFA and French police and government ministers, that thousands of ticketless Liverpool fans caused the trouble.
There was also no evidence to support such claims, which were made in a “reprehensible attempt by the authorities to evade all responsibility”.
Paris police have been criticized for failing to work with other stakeholders who organized the final and for failing to prevent congestion on a problematic access road to the Stade de France by using “weapons” such as tear gas and pepper spray without sufficient justification at a time when many fans were the victims of theft and physical assaults.
The panel also recalled the findings of a French Senate inquiry last year that said the chaos in Paris should serve as a wake-up call for improvements if France is to be deemed suitable for hosting this year’s Rugby World Cup and the Paris 2024 Olympics align safely.
However, shortly after the commission’s report was leaked, Liverpool issued a statement expressing displeasure at the way it was released.
“It is extremely disappointing that a report of this importance, so vital to the lives and future safety of football fans, should be leaked and released in this way.
The independent panel has been working on it for over eight months and it is right and proper that we are making the content of the report available to our supporters in an appropriate manner.
We will wait to receive a copy of the report and digest it thoroughly before commenting further.” said the Reds.
It is recalled that for the first time in history, the final started 36 minutes late while French police forces sprayed fans, even children, outside the stadium and tried to disperse the crowd waiting to enter the stadium , with tickets in hand.
