Van Dijk: ‘Football is about miracles, we hope to pull off one in Madrid’
Virgil van Dijk admitted Liverpool made a lot of mistakes against Real Madrid and that they are not having a good season but refused to write the Reds off ahead of the second leg at the Bernabeu.
Liverpool were competitive against Real in the first half but not in the second and that, according to Virgil van Dijk, was the reason they suffered a grievous 5-2 defeat at Anfield that leaves them a leg and a half out of the Champions League. .
However, he made it clear that miracles happen in football and the Reds have one more thing to go at the Bernabeu in the second leg between the two sides, scheduled for March 15.
“We had a good first half where we had full intensity. Then they scored a goal that I think we could have avoided but it was a great goal.
After the first half we weren’t good on the ball, we were too passive. The harsh reality is we are 5-2 down and have an almost impossible task to end the excitement in Madrid.”stressed the Netherlands international in his statements at the end of the game, adding, among other things:
“Football is about miracles and we hope we can pull off a miracle in Madrid. We should have been more compact, they punished us with their quality.”
We have enough good things, we should stick together. Not the best season as a football club, but that’s part of football. It’s about how you deal with setbacks.
Now we need to recover for the next match with Crystal Palace. That’s the reality”.
