Confusion on Twitter at Charles coronation, they thought they heard the Champions League anthem
If you see the coronation ceremony of King Charles III. and Queen Camilla and thought in the most sacred moment you heard the Champions League anthem, you were not mistaken. That was the reason.
Charles III became on Saturday (06/05) and officially King of the United Kingdom in a grand ceremony full of symbolism and traditions lost to the depths of the centuries which included, among other things, his surrender to the community, the oath to respect the law, that he gave, the anointing, his coronation with the golden crown of St Edward and… the Champions League anthem.
No, this is not intended to explain Charles’ great love of football, nor is it a joke that the television cameras following the ceremony were not shown.
The hymn was heard during the anointing, the most sacred part of the ceremony, during which the Archbishop of Canterbury forms the cross with oil on the monarch’s forehead, chest and hands while standing behind special partitions so the moment cannot be recorded George Frideric Handel’s Zadok the Priest was composed before the coronation of George II in 1727 and has been played at every coronation ever since.
This was also a point that caused a lot of confusion, confusing many TV viewers and internet users as they thought the Champions League anthem was being played at Westminster Abbey.
They were partly right, as the music of the anthem ‘Zadok the Priest’ was the inspiration for the Champions League theme composed by Tony Britten for the premier football competition of the UEFA Champions League in 1992. He himself never concealed the fact that he was inspired by Handel’s hymn, saying: “there is a string piece that he took from Handel and then wrote his own melody“.
