Champions League
The Italians came back strong, taking 3 of 3 for the fifth time in their history.
Roma and Fiorentina took over from Inter and also celebrated qualifying for the finals of European competition, earning an impressive 3 out of 3 for their country, having done so four times before.
Italian football is in full swing this week as three of its teams will battle it out for the top spot in three European competition finals over the next 20 days.
In the Champions League, it is Inter who earned the right to the dream, beating compatriots Milan with two wins and securing a ticket to the final on June 10 in Istanbul against Manchester City, followed by Roma and Fiorentina .
Mourinho’s side knocked out Leverkusen in the Europa League semi-finals and meet Sevilla for the prestigious trophy, while a Bel Paese representative will also be present in Europe’s third-tier club competition, with Fiorentina knocking out Basel (despite a home defeat) 2-1 in the first game) and meet West Ham at the end of the journey.
The impressive thing is that for the fifth time in history we will have three Italian teams in the same number of European finals in the same season (1988-89, 1989/90, 1992/93, 1993-94 (the previous four), although it is worth noting that ‘3 out of 3’ by Italians in finals only occurred in 1990.
When Milan won the Champions Cup (1-0 Benfica), Juventus the UEFA Cup (3-1, 0-0 in doubles final with Fiorentina) and Sampdoria the Cup Winners’ Cup (2-0 Anderlecht).
