Ancelotti: “City are favorites to win the Champions League”
Manchester City starts this year’s Champions League with the title of European champions and, according to Carlo Ancelotti, is the favorite to win back-to-back titles in the top competition.
The Champions League is the competition that traditionally “belongs” to Real, having won the prestigious cup 14 times (the second in conquests that Milan remained at 7 titles), nevertheless Carlo Ancelotti does not believe that his team is in the fight to win the Champions League title and have the first say.
The Italian coach was asked about the teams he thinks will be in the starting blocks and he didn’t hesitate to name Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City as favourites. He stressed that it was the team that won the cup and that it hadn’t changed too much compared to last year’s dream season. He finished it with a treble.
“Manchester City are favorites to win the Champions League. They have a squad that allowed them to win the trophy last year and not much has changed.”
There are always surprises, especially in the knockout games, but at the moment City are favorites. “Carleto” emphasized and said with regard to his team’s opening game against Union at the Bernabeu:
“Union are a new team in the Champions League but the fact that they are here shows that they have done very well. They are well organized defensively, they are compact and they play with intensity. The Champions League is a special competition for us.”
We will consider tomorrow’s game as special. We want to get off to a good start in the group phase, where we play at home.”
