Each club plays one home and one away match against each club in its group. The club does not play more than two home or two away matches in a row. Before the draw, 16 clubs were divided into 4 pots.

The first qualifying pot included defending champion Barcelona and the three top-ranked association champions (France, Germany and Spain). Since Barcelona also won the Spanish championship, the fourth place in the first pot was given to the champion of the fourth association in the rankings. Thus, Lyon, Bayern and Chelsea were seeded.

The four groups will be colour-coded to ensure paired clubs play matches on different days. Groups A and B will be red, groups C and D will be blue. When one of the paired clubs is withdrawn, for example from the red group (A or B), the other is automatically added to one of the blue groups (C or D). Matches between teams in the red-blue group will be played on different match days.

Drawing procedure: 1. Bag. The draw starts with Bag 1. All teams are divided into four groups in alphabetical order from Group A to Group D.

Basket 2 to 4. The first ball from basket 2 is drawn at random. Once it knows which command has been selected, the computer determines which groups are available to it. A ball that determines the team in the group is drawn from the bowl containing the group numbered balls. In this case, the computer provides all possible draw scenarios, including teams that have not yet been drawn.

After all teams in Pot 2 are placed into groups, the procedure is repeated for the teams in Pot 3 and 4. Teams in Pot 1 are provisionally placed first in their groups; Teams in pot 2 are temporarily placed second in their group, etc. Once the draw procedure is completed, the computer will assign final positions to the teams in each group.

The draw results and the full match schedule (rounds 1 to 6) will be made available to teams after the draw on Friday evening and will not be published until 12:00 Kiev time on Saturday.

The best two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals.
