Will Girona not be able to play in the 2024/25 Champions League because of Manchester City?
On December 21, the Madrid Region Twitter public published a shocking (as it initially seemed) post.
“According to UEFA rules Girona will not be able to play in the Champions League next seasonEven if the club qualifies there because it belongs to the same group Manchester City.
Girona can play in another UEFA tournament, but not in the same tournament.”
Girona and Manchester City represent a football consortium called City Football Group.
In 1998 UEFA introduced the following rule:
“No person may be involved simultaneously, directly or indirectly and in any capacity, in the management, administration and/or sporting performance of more than one club participating in a UEFA club competition.”
In the comments below the Madrid Region post, subscribers were quick to note that RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig are playing in the current Champions League season.
In the 2017/18 season, these clubs were simultaneously admitted to the Champions League. Then, UEFA defended its decision as follows:
“Following a comprehensive review, in addition to the many significant structural and administrative changes made by clubs (institutional, financial, personal, sponsorship and other matters), the IFC (Club Financial Control Authority) has determined that a legal or individual decision will no longer be a determining factor in the participation of more than one club in European competitions.” “It has an impact.”
In the 2023/24 season, UEFA allowed several more clubs belonging to the same consortium to participate in a tournament:
- Milan and Toulouse
The chairman of RedBird Capital has resigned as director of Toulouse.
- Aston Villa and Vitoria Guimaraes
Owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris owned 100% of Villans’ shares; They owned 46% of the Portuguese club’s rights before the start of the Champions League and later reduced Vitoria’s share to 29%, thus leaving both clubs. allowed.
- Brighton and Union Saint Gilloise
The owner is Tony Bloom, who reduced his stake in the Belgian club to 25% before the start of the season.
All 6 clubs must comply with the following rules:
- players cannot be transferred to each other, either as a full transfer or on loan, until September 2024;
- you may not collaborate in any way or enter into any technical or commercial agreements;
- Public scouting or player databases cannot be used.
City Football Group fully owns Manchester City, but they only own 47% of Girona’s rights. Maybe we will have to reduce the share in the next campaign…

Slim and closed stands. UEFA severely punishes Bayern for fans’ behavior
“Bavaria” Penalized for fans using fireworks in the Champions League match against Sporting – 3:1
Following the repeated use of pyrotechnics in the South Stand during home matches in the UEFA Champions League, Bayern were fined €50,000 by the UEFA Disciplinary Commission and the partial closure of the Allianz Arena (sectors 111–114) for the club’s next home match in European competition. The previously imposed suspended penalty will come into force after the incident in the match against Sporting Lisbon on 9 December 2025 and will be applied in the next home match against Union Saint-Gilloise on 21 January.
As tickets are not allocated to blocks during Bayern home matches in the lower tier of the South Stand and all 9,336 tickets for blocks 109-117 are valid, the club cannot technically cancel only 4,800 tickets for blocks 111-114. Therefore, as a first step, all South Stand tickets will be canceled and the club will refund the ticket price to the relevant buyers. All South Stand tickets will therefore be void and will not entitle you to a match against Saint-Gilloise at the Allianz Arena.
Ticket cancellations will be made on Friday. 109-110 and 115-117. In case of resale of seats in the blocks, Bayern will inform you about further actions and organizational details in a timely manner.

Anatoly TRUBIN: “It’s difficult, but Mourinho knows what to do”
Ukrainian goalkeeper of Benfica Lisbon Anatoly Trubin He believes his team can reach the knockout stages of the Champions League despite having just six points after six matches.
“We understand that we have put ourselves in a really bad and difficult situation with these four defeats in the first four matches. But we still think we can do it. We are still alive. It is still difficult because we will have to play with two strong teams (Juventus and Real Madrid – approx.).”
But as you said, we have a coach who has won a lot. And the last match for him was an anniversary match; 750th match of his career. So he has a lot of experience. And he knows what to do. He knows what to say to us to make us understand that we still have a chance. And we will work as one group; players, coaches, technical staff, everyone. Fans too. And together we can do this,” the goalkeeper said in an interview with On The Continent – A European Football Podcast.
