PAOK went through the penalty shoot-out for the first time after four penalties. He had previously been excluded from Eintracht, Bayern, Sevilla and Benfica.

PAOK defeated Midtjylland 2-1 in the regular season and went to penalties, where there were four exclusions up to the evening, previously in the same process four times.

But Lutsescu’s team did just that. He broke the curse of the penalty shootout and secured a historic qualification with a 5-3 penalty shootout win, ending that negative tradition.

Which was as follows. In the 1981/82 season it was Eintracht that eliminated PAOK on penalties. The 1983/84 season was followed by Bayern’s exclusion, and in 1990/91 it was Sevilla that eliminated the Thessaloniki side.

The last time PAOK played penalties was in the 1999–00 season when Benfica didn’t ban them from continuing the tournament.
