Mitchell’s great European night guide for Europa League continuation Olympiakos
Mitchell takes charge of Olympiakos and faces a difficult task of qualifying for the Europa League. However, the Spanish manager is used to difficult tasks and delivered big European nights in his first stint.
Olympiacos enter a new day with Carlos Corberan a thing of the past and Mitchell taking the technical lead for the Reds and Whites. The 59-year-old Spanish coach has a difficult task ahead of him. He needs to “tie” the team in a short time and reverse the situation in Greece and in Europe.
In the Europa League groups, Olympiakos started the worst. Lost 2-1 to Nantes in France and lost 3-0 to Freiburg in Karaiskakis. The Red-Whites are bottom with zero points and four games left.
The next two games against Karabagh in Karaiskakis (October 6, 10 p.m.) and in Azerbaijan (October 13, 7:45 p.m.) will be decisive for the European course of the red-whites. We remind you that the first goes to the round of 16, the second to the playoffs for the round of 16, while the third is relegated to the playoffs for the round of 16 of the Conference League.
However, Mitchell has the experience of Europe. He managed to score important results in his first season at Olympiakos, while in 2013/14 he guided the Red-Whites to the last 16 of the Champions League, where he faced Manchester United.
The great European run 13/14
Mitchell’s first European games for the Red-Whites were in the Europa League round of 16, when he was also eliminated by Levante in the 2012/13 season. These were also among his first games for the red and white. The big march naturally took place in the following racing year.
Olympiacos were drawn in a difficult group with Paris, Benfica and Anderlecht. However, the red and white could take second place. They were defeated by the Parisians in both games, but the Piraeus went unbeaten in all others. Mitchell’s side had beaten Anderlecht 3-0 in Belgium, with Roberto overpowering and Mitroglou scoring a hat-trick.
This was followed by a 1-1 draw at Da Luz and a 1-0 win over Benfica at Karaiskakis, with Roberto again being the Red and White hero and Manolas scoring with a header. Qualification was sealed with a 3:1 home win against Anderlecht.
On February 25, 2014 Olympiacos had a great win against Manchester United by Rooney, Van Persie, Evra, Ferdinand and many others. Chori Dominguez had scored the first, Joel Campbell making it 2-0. The second leg was a non-match as the Red Devils turned the tide against them at Old Trafford.
Third place in a difficult group before the end
In the 2014/2015 season, Olympiacos had an even more difficult draw in the Champions League groups. The red-whites were in the same group as Atletico, Juventus and Malmo. Mitchell used Karaiskakis as his team finished 3rd and qualified for the Europa League.
At this stage of the groups, Olympiakos had achieved three big results in Faliro. They beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 while also beating Juventus 1-0. In the final game of the process, they beat Malmo 4-2 to confirm third place.
He could have qualified but was defeated in all away games, finishing -1 against Juventus and -4 against Atlético. In the Europa League round of 16 against Dnipro, Mitchell was a thing of the past and the red-whites were led by Vitor Pereira.
