The incident added an hour to the match against Turkish side Fenerbahce, which ended with a 1-0 defeat of Aston Valley. This result allowed the Birmingham team to guarantee their place in the 1/8 finals of the tournament. The only goal of the match was scored by Jadon Sancho. As the referee reaches the final hour, Emeri decides to replace Tielemans with 18-year-old academy graduate George Gemmings.

Tielemans walked straight to the line to bring in a substitute, but this seemed to anger the coach. Emeri obviously wants to be put on for an hour and walk more. As the Belgian approached the technical zone, Emery nodded emotionally and pushed the gravel towards the back of the reserves.
