Asensio: “If I play in Barcelona? I can’t answer now
Marco Asensio was asked about Barcelona’s alleged interest in signing him and said he was unaware while expressing his hope of extending his contract with Real, which expires in the summer of 2023.
Marco Asensio is not one of the players considered to be a key player at Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid, yet he has been at the forefront of the news for the last 24 hours.
The reasons are twofold: the first has to do with his contract, which expires next summer, which will allow him to negotiate with any club he chooses from January, and the second concerns Barcelona, where the eternal rivals the Merengues made his case seem to be watching closely.
On the occasion of the above scenario, which wants the Blaugrana to have him on their radar to see him through Real Madrid’s hands, the player himself was asked, with the Spain international appearing on TV show El Partidazo de la Cope and try to dribble in the scenarios around Barcelona.
“I don’t know if Barcelona want me, there are rumors about a lot of clubs, it’s normal. In seven months I can sign as a free agent for any team.” stressed Asensio, who, when asked if he’s the type of person who can say categorically: “I’ll never play for Barcelona”, commented:
“I’ve never thought about my future at Barcelona, it wasn’t on my mind so I don’t know. I can’t answer that at the moment.”
As for his relationship with Real Madrid and whether he wants to renew his vows of allegiance, he didn’t rule out extending his stay at the Bernabeu beyond June 2023:
“I had chances to go, yes. Signing a new contract at Real is not up to me, there are many factors. I hope it happens, I’m happy here.”
