Llorente: ‘I would play for Real to be Benzema’s replacement’
Fernando Llorente explained in a TV interview the reason why he has never worn Real Madrid’s shirt until now, while admitting he would accept playing as Benzema’s replacement without pay if offered by the Merengues.
Fernando Llorente’s CV is quite impressive considering that he has played for Bilbao, Juventus, Sevilla, Tottenham and Napoli while taking part in the final stages of Euros and the World Cup with the Spanish national team.
There’s a… dislike of his, though, and it has to do with the fact that he’s never worn Real’s whites, and when asked if he’s ever been close to the merengues, he gives a disarming response:
“No, no, I was never around. Whenever Real wanted me, I had a contract with Bilbao, who never wanted me to go to Real, while Madrid were never willing to pay my release clause.
When the opportunity presented itself, Juventus were quicker.” The 37-year-old Spanish striker initially explained, to add: “I would love to wear the white jersey. At the moment Real Madrid are the best team in the world and it’s amazing what they are doing in the Champions League.
Every time they get far they can win the trophy. If Ancelotti asked me to play the role of Benzema’s replacement, I would do it for nothing.”
As for his plans from now on, at the age of 37 and after being sacked by Eibar at the end of last season, the towering striker said:
“I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future. I want to continue even though I haven’t been in action for three months. I’m still training and looking for something that excites me. If not, we’ll look for something else to do to fill me.”
