Sevilla 1-1 Athletic: Sampaoli’s return didn’t prevent defeat

Jorge Sampaoli’s return to the Sevilla bench didn’t offer the psychological shock that would have prevented them from losing a point (1-1) to Athletic.

Sevilla were betting on the psychological shock that the sacking of Julen Lopetegui and the signing of Jorge Sampaoli would bring, but they didn’t resist Athletic. That 1-1 in “Ramon Sanchez Pitjuan” resulted in another drop of points that leaves it far behind in the La Liga table after 8 games.

The Andalusians started the game in the best possible way after taking the lead in the 4th minute through Oliver Torres. After the first quarter, however, they tried to destroy the Basque game rather than create something of their own.

Ernesto Valverde’s men took the baton of creation, threatening Marko Dmitrovic’s goal (favored by the out-of-form Yasin Bunou) and equalizing after a few warnings from substitute Mikel Vesga. After Athletic failed to score a second goal, a 1-1 draw seemed inevitable, with the Basques missing a chance to catch Barcelona and Real at the top.
