Richarlison gets emotional: “I wasn’t born in a golden cradle, we feel different from other people”
Tottenham striker Richarlison has spoken out in Premier League VIDEO about racism and the attack he received after a fan threw a banana at him during Brazil’s friendly against Tunisia.
Richarlison was the victim of a racist attack during Brazil’s friendly against Tunisia last September.
As the Seleção striker celebrated to make it 2-1, a fan from the stands threw a banana at him, which the Tottenham player kicked off. A few days later, another Brazilian, Vinicius, was also racially attacked.
The Premier League released a VIDEO in which Richarlison spoke about the incident, hinted at racism and suggested it was important to tighten the laws to prevent such phenomena in the future.
“The penalty should be harsher. When that person threw the banana there, I ended up leaving them on the sidelines and celebrating the goal with my teammates. I left them there and focused on the pitch. But, like I said, those are the kinds of things that should be punished so other people don’t do the same.
We live in a hard world, a hard time, where people have no respect for race, religion, politics or anything else.
I too was in a mall and the security guards were following me and my friends. It wasn’t just because we didn’t wear expensive clothes or because we were thieves. This is quite painful because we feel different from other people. This hurts us.
I know what I went through in my childhood, I was not born into a golden cradle and now that I live better I try to help as much as possible, especially the people of Brazil. I think we live in a difficult time, but I still dream of the day when racism ends.”
