Pique: ‘I love Barcelona very much, I was born here and I will die here’
Gerard Pique played for the last time of his career at the Camp Nou in the league game against Almeria and in the final he bowed, took the microphone and spoke about his great love affair with Barcelona.
Barcelona’s game against Almeria was essentially dedicated to Gerard Pique, with the Catalan centre-back making his 616th career appearance for the Blaugrana and most recently at the Camp Nou after announcing a few 24 hours ago that he had reached the final decision to hang up his football boots.
His teammates, the coaching staff and the Barca crowd all adored him in his last game, when he took the mic in the final and addressed the crowd, unable to hide his emotions:
“First of all, I would like to thank everyone. Thank you to the fans, thank you to my team-mates, thank you to the coaching staff and everyone else at the club.
As you grow up in life, you realize that sometimes you have to let go of a love. It was never an easy decision after so much love I found in Barcelona but it was time to go.
I love Barça very much and that’s why I think it’s the right time to leave. This isn’t goodbye. I’m sure I’ll be back here in the future.
My grandfather made me a member of the club the day I was born. I was born here and will die here. Long live Barcelona forever” Pique told the crowd who didn’t stop adoring him as the 35-year-old stopper couldn’t hold back his tears.
