Betis 1-1 Sevilla: Three straight red goals, a crazy own goal and an unlikely shot decided the derby
The Derbi Sevillano had anything but a winner: three straight reds before the 50th minute, a crazy own goal from Jesus Navas, a stunning shot from Nemanja Gudel and over 20 minutes of stoppage time as Betis and Sevilla drew 1-1.
Betis and Sevilla were drawn 1-1 on the 13th day of La Liga in a derby at “Benito Villamarin”, which was tough. Three direct referrals, two separate goals and 20 minutes of stoppage time formed an explosive mix from which no winner emerged.
The game started at a good pace with both teams trying to play mostly down the wings. The tough game was to be expected, but in the 38th minute Gonzalo Montiel grabbed Alex Moreno’s knee and saw the first straight red.
Five minutes later, in added time in the Sevilla area, a chase was spurned by Jesus Navas, who… shot at Yassin Bunou’s goal and scored an own goal. In fact, he was injured and substituted at this stage.
In 11-minute injury time in the 1st half, Nabil Fekir rushed in from the right but he elbowed Oliver Torres and he too was sent off.
The 2nd half started with another straight red, for Borja Iglesias pressing Juan Jordan, and the situation for the “Verdiblancos” changed drastically. With a goal more and a player more, they were at a disadvantage.
Jorge Sampaoli dropped Youssef en Nesiri and strengthened his attacking line, while Manuel Pellegrini responded with Luis Enrique and Andres Guardado.
The game was completely shifted to Betis’ ground, who only had 25% possession in the 2nd half and two finals. Most of the visitors’ attempts went astray, but a shot from Nemanja Gudel from 30 meters hit the goal and made it 1-1 in the 81st minute.
