Barcelona 1-1 Espanyol: Joselu’s penalty snatches two valuable points from the Blaugrana
In an incredible Catalan derby that saw two red cards and double-digit yellow cards, Barcelona took the lead through Alonso in the 7th minute, but Espanyol walked away to a draw from the Camp Nou thanks to Joselu’s 73rd-minute penalty.
The difference in quality and potential between Barcelona and Espanyol is there and undeniable, but when these two teams meet it’s going to be a tough Catalan derby and that’s exactly what unfolded at the Camp Nou on Saturday afternoon (31/12) in the frame from the 15th round of La Liga.
The Blaugrana were better and found the goal early, only in the 7th minute through Alonso, but the Pericos found a way to level the game with a Joselu penalty in the 73rd minute, only to withstand pressure from their compatriots and get a valuable point in the fight for whereabouts and deprive “Barca”, who are now level with Real, of two points.
The game
Dominant in the first half, Barcelona soon found the back of the net with Xavi’s men playing… heading high into the box after a corner and Alonso receiving an assist from Christensen to make it 1-0.
Up until the 70th minute, the home side seemed completely in control and unthreatened, but a recklessness from Alonso, who pushed Joselou into his team’s large space, gave the “victim” the opportunity to put the ball in play with a white arrow and defeated Ter Stegen in the 73rd minute to equalize 1-1 with the first goal of his career at the Camp Nou.
What ensued was an exciting game starring Mateu Laothe, with the international referee dealing lavishly (2 reds and 13 yellows in total) and within minutes leaving both teams down to 10 men, Alba with two yellows within five minutes place (the second for protest) as did Souza in the same way.
Laoth had initially shown the way to the dressing room and Cabrera with a straight red card but their decision was reversed via VAR with the game… turning into a rodeo and the Blaugrana creating two big chances in two minutes but carrying goalkeeper Fernandez had just as many great interventions, in the 87th minute with Christensen’s header and in the 88th minute with Lewandowski.
The home side were pushing for a much-coveted second goal in the ten minutes of added time, but Espanyol persevered, going 1-1 into the final and sealing a painful point loss for title contenders Barcelona after their brace. Taken away a point advantage previously enjoyed against eternal rivals Real.

Real Madrid have 20-year-old Robert Renan on their shortlist for central defense
Real Madrid have suffered a major blow to their central defense due to injuries and one of the things they have on their list ahead of January is the loan of 20-year-old Brazilian central defender Robert Renan from Zenit.
After the serious injuries to David Alaba and Ender Militao, Real Madrid have entered the transfer market to sign a central defender.
One of the cases that the Merengues are considering, according to AS, is 20-year-old Brazilian central defender Robert Renan, who plays for Zenit St. Petersburg. Madrid initially wants to bring him in with a loan and a purchase option for next summer.
The young footballer is exactly the right person to strengthen the Merengues as he is left-footed and can develop into a very good footballer. This particular formula would also satisfy Zenit, but there is a non-football problem.
Groups linked to the Russian state continue to face sanctions from the European Union (and the US) over the military invasion of Ukraine. Specifically, teams cannot receive an amount over 108,000 euros.
Zenit is owned by Gazprom, one of the most famous oil companies (in the world) controlled by the Russian state.

Barcelona is threatened with exclusion from the new Champions League because of FFP
According to the German newspaper “Die Welt”, Barcelona is threatened with exclusion from the new Champions League due to violations of Financial Fair Play. However, the Catalans are not aware of the specific risk.
A few hours after the legal recognition before the Court of Justice of the European Union of the European Super League, a project that Barcelona and Real Madrid have “operated” from the beginning until today, the Blaugrana are in adventure.
A publication by German newspaper Die Welt reports that the Catalans are at risk of being banned from the new Champions League (for up to three years) due to Financial Fair Play violations. Barcelona announced gigantic profits (a whopping 304 million euros), but according to the report, UEFA will audit the finances as the income must only come from “football activities”.
Barcelona reported on its balance sheet revenue from “Barca Studios”, the project that manages the team’s audiovisual material, such as the team’s official channel (Barca TV).
Sources in Barcelona management told Mundo Deportivo that they were unaware of the scenario in question.
