Real Sociedad – Athletic 3-1: Won the derby and escapes the battle of the front four
It took Real Sociedad three derbies to record a win over Athletic and they did so with an emphatic 3-1 win that cemented them in 3rd place in La Liga.
The Euskal Derbia in between Real Sociedad and Sporty found a winner for the first time since December 2020 in La Liga and at the right time. the 3-1 On Matchday 17, Immanol Alguathil’s team moved even further away from their pursuers in third place, which also includes Ernesto Valverde.
The match at the “Real Arena” included spectacle, excitement, goals and everything a sports fan would expect from a Basque derby. The hosts quickly took the lead, largely thanks to inspiration from David Silva and Takefusa Kumbo, but were unable to ‘consolidate’ the lead.
In the 25th minute Alexander Serlott opened up from close range after an excellent feint, with which he emptied two opponents, and in the 37th minute Kubo dribbled under Danny Vivian’s feet to make it 2-0 in four quarters. In the 40′, however, the guests managed to reduce with Oian Santhet and get back into the game.
Real Sociedad forced a substitution early in the 2nd half, Charlotte making way for Mikel Oyarthabal. The Basque striker scored in the 62nd minute when Kubo won a penalty and Gerai Alvarez was sent off. It was his first since March 2022 at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real, with a serious injury in between.
With a two-goal lead and a man on the pitch, Real Sociedad were ‘bosses’ both on the pitch and in the Basque Country, scoring a win that widened the gap to Villarreal to seven points.
