La Liga
In the Champions League, Sociedad and Espanyol were relegated
Sociedad lost away to Atlético but celebrated fourth place and qualification for the Champions League thanks to the defeat against Villarreal. A bitter draw against “Mestalla” for Espanyol that promoted them to the second division.
Barcelona have been crowned champions for a number of seasons now and the game against Mallorca was a prime opportunity for their fans to say goodbye to Busquets and Alba in their last Blaugrana appearance at the Camp Nou, but La Liga matchday 37 brought and other developments in the championship landscape.
One of them had to do with the fight for the last ticket to the Champions League, as Sociedad were aware of the 2-1 defeat in Madrid against in-form Atletico (the Rojiblancos are third in the table and still chasing second place at Real). but we leave Wanda Metropolitano with a smile from ear to ear.
And that’s because Villarreal was defeated by Rayo at the same time in another stadium in the Spanish capital with the same result, with the Basques thus maintaining the five-point advantage over the yellow sub and moving (over 4th place) place) the return to the league secured a top interclub event after 10 years.
As for the battle for bottom, after bottom-placed Elche, the second team that will follow them in the Segunda Division in the season finale has been announced, with Espanyol taking on that particularly awkward role. The Barcelona team caused the upset in the “Mestalla” against Valencia and remained in defense until the 90th minute, but Lino’s goal in the 90th + 3rd minute sealed the 2-2 that sealed relegation to the second division .
It is worth noting that the final matchday is awaited with great interest as six teams will be battling to avoid a ‘cursed’ 18th place (Cádiz, Getafe, Valencia, Almeria, Telta and Valladolid) while another five will have chances to to finish the 7th place that gives a ticket to the conference (Osasuna, Athletic, Girona, Rayo, Seville).
