Football is a celebration, not a war, and that is the message Athletic sent after their 3-0 defeat to Sociedad in the Basque derby by releasing a video of a friend enjoying the game alongside thousands of opposing fans.
The first major Basque derby of the season had a clear winner: Immanuel Alguatil’s Sociedad beat Athletic 3-0 at the Real Arena and jumped to 4th place in La Liga after 8 games, ahead of their arch-rivals.
Goals from Le Normand, Kumbo and Oyarthabal had the stands cheered by the adoring Sociedad fans, but the one who stole the show was a friend of… Athletic, who didn’t lose his smile despite his team’s poor result and showed it on camera while thousands of his opponents’ friends were around him, jumping for joy.
“This is us. Always sporty, through thick and thin.” was the message from Ernesto Valverde’s team shortly after the end of the game, as Athletic’s… brave friend quickly went viral on social media, wearing red and white in a sea of blue people and smiling broadly for the camera.
