Chygrinsky: “It was difficult when I was in Greece, even though I knew my family was in danger in Ukraine”

Dmytro Chygrinski spoke to Athletic about his time in Greece and the outbreak of war in Ukraine, while also looking back on his time in Barcelona.

In the summer of 2016, Dmytro Chygrinsky wore the AEK jersey, with which he competed for five years – until 2021.

The Ukrainian central defender stayed in our country and stayed with Ionian for two years. While he was in Greece, war broke out in Ukraine in February 2022 following the Russian invasion.

Speaking to The Athletic about this period, he explained that it was extremely difficult for him to be away from his family, who were in danger and experiencing the nightmare of war.

“It’s really hard to be abroad when you know your country, your family, your friends and your loved ones are in danger. They have suffered from missiles, attacks, bombings and other nightmares of war.”

I know I’m a footballer, but the mental support and the psychological part are extremely important right now. That’s why it’s good for me to be in Ukraine, with my family and friends. Only my presence in Ukraine is a support.”

At the same time, the 37-year-old looked back on his time in Barcelona, where he only played 14 games in the 2009/10 season.

I remember a conversation with Guardiola and he said: “Dmytro, I see you are a bit confused, so please don’t try to overload yourself. I know you’re always doing extra things at the hotel you’re staying at and going out there to work, but listen: I want you to focus on what I’m telling you.

I probably wasn’t experienced or calm enough to see things clearly. I was 22 years old, still young and inexperienced. You can’t be balanced, so of course you need the support. You need people to help you, to guide you. People who make you understand.

My relationship with Pep was fantastic. He tried to help me when I was under extra pressure. Even later, when I stopped playing a lot, I always stayed in touch with him. I always felt supported by him. He said, “I see how you train, I see your effort. I like everything about you, Dmytro. Just keep the same intensity.”

I am grateful for the support you have shown me, for your trust in me. We had a great relationship even after I left.

Real Madrid have 20-year-old Robert Renan on their shortlist for central defense

Real Madrid have suffered a major blow to their central defense due to injuries and one of the things they have on their list ahead of January is the loan of 20-year-old Brazilian central defender Robert Renan from Zenit.

After the serious injuries to David Alaba and Ender Militao, Real Madrid have entered the transfer market to sign a central defender.

One of the cases that the Merengues are considering, according to AS, is 20-year-old Brazilian central defender Robert Renan, who plays for Zenit St. Petersburg. Madrid initially wants to bring him in with a loan and a purchase option for next summer.

The young footballer is exactly the right person to strengthen the Merengues as he is left-footed and can develop into a very good footballer. This particular formula would also satisfy Zenit, but there is a non-football problem.

Groups linked to the Russian state continue to face sanctions from the European Union (and the US) over the military invasion of Ukraine. Specifically, teams cannot receive an amount over 108,000 euros.

Zenit is owned by Gazprom, one of the most famous oil companies (in the world) controlled by the Russian state.

Barcelona is threatened with exclusion from the new Champions League because of FFP

According to the German newspaper “Die Welt”, Barcelona is threatened with exclusion from the new Champions League due to violations of Financial Fair Play. However, the Catalans are not aware of the specific risk.

A few hours after the legal recognition before the Court of Justice of the European Union of the European Super League, a project that Barcelona and Real Madrid have “operated” from the beginning until today, the Blaugrana are in adventure.

A publication by German newspaper Die Welt reports that the Catalans are at risk of being banned from the new Champions League (for up to three years) due to Financial Fair Play violations. Barcelona announced gigantic profits (a whopping 304 million euros), but according to the report, UEFA will audit the finances as the income must only come from “football activities”.

Barcelona reported on its balance sheet revenue from “Barca Studios”, the project that manages the team’s audiovisual material, such as the team’s official channel (Barca TV).

Sources in Barcelona management told Mundo Deportivo that they were unaware of the scenario in question.
