Xavi: “We had 31 shots but we lacked efficiency”
According to Xavi, who claimed his team was “under construction”, Barcelona lacked efficiency in their defeat to Girona.
Girona clinched the Catalan derby and the title with a 4-2 win over Barcelona in Montjuic to return to the top of the La Liga table.
At the press conference, Xavi stated that the two teams deserved to win, while stressing that the Catalans lacked efficiency.
“It’s a tough blow because we had high hopes of staying one point behind Girona and two behind Real. Now we are seven behind Girona and five behind Real and level with Atlético, who still have a game in hand.”
This is our reality. This is a Barcelona in the making. I stay positive, I trust the team, but we have an excellent opponent. We must continue on our course and not hesitate. It wasn’t a bad game, but we lost.
We have to keep working, there is no other choice. Last year we were beaten badly, but in the end we won two titles.” said the Catalan coach first and then congratulated Girona:
“Girona deserves a lot of credit for what they do. They lead the table and have a lead of seven points. This is well deserved. I think the work that both Mitchell and the Girona players are doing is impressive. “You deserve to be congratulated.”
If Barcelona won we would say that would be fair too, I think we had 31 shots. We lacked efficiency and perhaps the mistakes in defense cost us.”
