Sociedad stumbled with a move from Barcelona or Athletic
Sociedad remained 0-0 with Getafe in Anoeta, failing to overtake Atletico in fourth place, while Athletic Madrid left with a superb 1-0 win over Vagecano.
Sociedad came on the back of three consecutive wins in all competitions but made a joke at the worst possible moment after being stuck in a goalless draw against Getafe in their 22nd La Liga game in San Sebastian on Sunday night (23/1) to remain fifth, at – 2 from the champion Atletico, who is 4th in the general classification.
The Basques were all talkative and little threatening in the first half, while taking the lead in the second with David Silva and Alexander Isaac, with the Sweden international having the two best stages of the game to take the three points in the final, with his powerful shot that shook the bar at 90+3′.
But while Sociedad lost valuable ground in the battle for a place in the Champions League, the other great footballing exponent of the Basque Country clinched a magnificent victory: Athletic got the three-pointer in Madrid against Rayo Vallecano, scoring Serrano in 30′ and to show that it took shape (it will face Real in a single match) after beating Barcelona (3-2) midweek that sent it to the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey.
