Saint-Etienne – Auxerre 1: 1 (4: 5 points): “Diplomats” return to Ligue 1 after ten years
Auxerre return to Ligue 1 after beating St Etienne on penalties (4-5) after a 1-1 draw in the regular season. Fatal for the “Kronen” Boudebouz, who missed his team’s first penalty.
THE eyelets returned to Ligue 1 after ten years and dropped away St Etienne in the second category of France. The two sides settled their differences on penalties, in which Boudebouz missed the crown’s first penalty, giving them a record of defeat and relegation after 18 years.
The game reached a penalty shootout as both teams “evened” the score of the first game. Auxerre first took the lead with a superb header from Sakhi in the 51st minute from a lovely Otre cross.
The Crowns responded with Mahdi Kamaras in the 76th. Kriveli took a corner from the right and Kamara smashed everyone in the air to make it 1-1.
Nothing changed in extra time, both teams had their chances to score a second goal, but to no avail, thereby resolving their differences on penalties. The game was of course stigmatized by the invading St Etienne fans who attacked their players.
