Galtier, the great hope of Paris and the question that will judge its success
Charlie writes about Christophe Galtier one step away from taking the technical lead of Paris Saint-Germain but also questions if he can win the Luis Campos bet.
Clerk, successful but inexperienced in Paris Saint-Germain “wanting”.
Last week, Paris announced their settlement with Luis Campos over the debt of the president’s sporting icon.
In practice, the Portuguese Campos took the place of Leonardo. For anyone who knows their way around people and things, Campos’ signing meant two names would be competing for the managerial position in Paris once Zinedine Zidane made a hesitant appearance.
Zidane is waiting for the national team’s bench to be emptied
In France, everyone knows that despite the many offers Zidane has accepted, he avoids taking over a big club because his dream is to be on the bench for the France national team.
If Didier Deschamps hadn’t won the previous World Cup and signed a contract until the World Cup in Qatar, Zidane would already be on the national team’s bench.
The failure of the ‘Tricolors’ in the Nations League made the need for a change in technical leadership even more acute after the end of the World Cup in Qatar and Zidane moved even further away from Paris.
Mourinho’s “No”
From the moment Zidane avoided saying ‘yes’ and Leonardo was replaced by Campos, the two coaches he trusted to deliver a direct lead for the expensive and difficult Paris bench were Jose Mourinho and Christophe Galte.
Mourinho kept his word. Although he stated in a recent interview with Joe Cole the day after winning the Conference League that he misses coaching top players who are ready to win the Champions League and that he hopes to return to that level at some point, he held his promise… he made to the Roma world: that he would let the three-year contract he signed expire.
It was Kampos’ first goal but it was erased and he immediately went on to the next. Galtier doesn’t have the glamor of Mourinho, he hasn’t achieved great success in his career abroad, but together with Campos they signed the miracle from Lille.
13 years, three teams
Galtier as a coach has not written anything on his CV that compares to what Paris wants to achieve. He is the first coach since 2009, so exactly 13 years, but only counts three jobs
He’s a hard working coach who, wherever he worked, has over the long term managed to reach the top of the teams he’s had his hands on.
Before becoming the first, he held the role of assistant coach for a decade. In fact, he had made a small passage from Mars in 2001 as a collaborator of the great Henri Michel.
He had worked as a second attacker at Marseille, Bastia, Al Ain, Portmouth, Sochaux, Lyon and Saint-Etienne.
Continuous St Etienne in the Put 4 – 8
He took his first steps in Saint-Etienne. He was a partner of Peren, the team was not doing well, he had a 6-1-10 record and mid-December 2009 was in the relegation zone.
Galtier was the first coach to sit on the bench for the first time in a home game against Marseille, who won the league at the end of the season.
The “Kronen” had conceded seven goals in the previous two games, so the white draw they drew was a small triumph. With Record 6-7-8 at the end of the season saved St. Etienne, who finished in 17th place.
She stayed there for eight years and dreamed of taking them to the Champions League, but it was above the club’s ceiling. With the departure, it turned out that the security he gave the team was a luxury.
St Etienne, who have been playing for their whereabouts for the past three years and lost the battle this year and were relegated, was consistently between 4th and 8th. After eight years of good work, he realized he had reached the ceiling with the club and decided to look for someone else to overcome him.
The financial miracle in Lille
But he chose a very difficult mission. His decision to take over Bielsa Lille’s was tantamount to a suicide squad.
Bielsa wasted a lot of money in the summer of 2017 and led the team to the abyss. Lille risked financial disaster if they lost the charge. Galtier put her in 19th place with one foot in the grave, not only saving her from bankruptcy but managing to fill her coffers with money and walk away from her champion.
A total of 400 million euros has flowed into the coffers of the team from the sale of footballers since the day he took over Lille. During the same period, purchases totaled 168 million. They understand that Galtier’s work brought a profit of 232 million euros to the “Lilua” funds from the transfer market alone.
Add the times the team went straight to the Champions League group stage. It goes without saying that in Galtier’s time we had an economic miracle.
Football is such a wonderful sport that Lille, who made their living from sales, were able to win the league from Paris in the 2020/21 season, where they can buy any player they want.
But it’s also such a wonderful sport that no one can put their hand in the fire when the man who, with a much smaller squad, with an incredibly smaller budget, managed to steal a championship from Paris, that’s the right choice for them Bank is from.
His work did not inspire enthusiasm in Nice
But before we go, in Paris’ collaboration with Galtier, there was last year’s collaboration with Raktlif’s Nis. Galtier was sought after the miracle with Lille.
Carpets were laid so that he could be taken over by both Ola Lyon and Raktlif in Nis. He decided on the Nis project, but the first year did not bring the result that the club’s people expected. No one has the right to say Nis failed.
He played in the Cup final, won 5th place and was eliminated from the Conference League and due to an initial agreement – which appears to be broken – there are still two more years left for development.
However, his work at Lille greatly increased the demands, especially of an administration able to spend money without losing the top-flight footballers. Nobody was happy without Europe, neither with the 5th place nor with the image of the team in the lost final against Nantes, but above all with the level of football that Nis played.
In short, there is no certainty that Galtier failed last year, but expectations were higher.
He still has a two-year contract in Nice, but in Nis they weren’t too keen on his job and they are expected to let him go to Paris with an amount of almost 10 million euros. They are already discussing the return of Switzerland’s Favre, who spent two successful years at the club from 2016-18.
kill players
Galtier has enjoyed a successful 13-year career on the bench but has duties and demands that cannot be compared to the work he will be taking on in Paris.
He didn’t have to manage vendettas, relying on hard work in training, his knowledge of how to get the playing cap from his players and his ability to partner with Kampos in finding equal substitutes who were often better than the players which he sold.
In Paris, however, the requirements seem to be different for both. The administration has asked Kampos to reduce the team’s expenses, which has to do with the contracts of players who have not made a difference.
In fact, he needs to find a way to “kill” players who have big contracts but haven’t been able to show personality and play for the money they cost. Herrera, Paredes, Vainaldum, Icardi, Kuzawa, Bernard and many others are convicted of murder.
He has no experience knocking out European games
Galtier is destined to succeed somewhere where he has no experience. He has enjoyed a successful career in French football which would make him an ideal choice for any side battling Paris and aiming to establish themselves in the top three of the Champions League.
However, in the “I want” Paris does not have the slightest experience, neither in terms of managing footballers of the level and idiosyncrasies of Ebape, Messi, Neymar, nor in terms of managing knockout games in Europe.
objections as to whether it is the right choice
Attention, Galtier has never trained in a knockout game after the group stage of a European tournament.
He has played in Europa League groups with St Etienne and in Champions League groups with Lille. Paris is not looking for a coach to win the French championship, but the Champions League.
Nobody has the right to say that Galtier is not a really good coach. However, the question that persists and worries the French media is how a team is built that has the absolute goal of winning the most important competition between clubs to choose a coach who has not the slightest experience of K.- o. games of this organization.
He hasn’t even given half a European KO game in his career.
The question that Galtier will judge
There’s also a question to be answered as to whether Galtier has the personality and ability to assert himself in the dressing room. If he can do what Mauricio Pochettino failed to do at the crucial moment, let him train.
That is, finding the personality to tell Messi and Neymar that “they have to go out to keep the qualification because they need two more athletic footballers to support Ebape in the last part of the games”.
To do exactly what Pochettino failed to do in the rematch at the Bernabeu. Paris seems impossible not to conquer The Championship and nobody worries too much about the football the team will be playing.
What is needed is a good technical staff to train the stars of Paris in the knockout games and provide psychological and regular help in the Champions League border struggles.
Zidane presented himself for this job and was the ideal. Paris has been waiting for him for a long time, he thought he could reach an agreement with him, but “Zizou” sees that he only has six months left to get the job he wants.
Mourinho would go well with the same ‘I want’ but he has kept his promise to the Roma world and Campos has decided to give the job to the coach who has achieved an incredible footballing miracle with him.
It remains to be seen if Galtier can develop from a very good working coach in Paris to a world-class coach.

Paris: “We completely reject any plan for the so-called Super League”
The European Super League wants to change the situation in European football, but at the moment it is difficult to find many strong allies, with Paris having made it clear that it has no intention whatsoever of becoming part of this league.
The General Court of the European Union on Thursday (December 21) accepted the appeal of A22, which represents the European Super League, against the monopoly of UEFA and FIFA, ruling that the European associations do not have the right to authorize interclub competition.
This fact gave Barcelona and Real, who are leading the effort to create the ESL, the right to talk about a new era that is dawning in the football of the old continent, but their dream of leaving aside the European Football Federation will not come true is easy .
And that is because they are currently facing numerous hurdles erected by famous European teams that do not want to leave the UEFA umbrella, including Paris, which expresses its categorical rejection of the prospect of creating the new organization.
“Paris Saint-Germain strongly rejects any plan for the so-called Super League, which has been in place since day one and will always remain so.
As a proud European institution, Paris supports the principles of the European sports model, the values of open competition and inclusion, and collaborates with all recognized bodies in European football.
Especially with the fans and the players who are at the heart of the game.”says the corresponding announcement on Wednesday, which bears the signature of Paris President Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
