War in Ukraine: British MPs demand Abramovich’s release from Chelsea
British lawmakers have questioned whether Roman Abramovich could remain involved with Chelsea following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Chelsea owner has been the focus of fierce criticism from members of the UK Parliament. Roman Abramovichafter the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Labor MP Chris Bryant referred to the Russian tycoon and called for him to be banned from owning shares in a UK sports club.
“I saw a document leaked by the Interior Ministry in 2019 that said Mr. Abramovich ‘keeps the spotlight on Abramovich as part of the government’s strategy for Russia aimed at exposing illicit financing and illegal activity. government interest, due to his contacts with the Russian state and his public association with corrupt practices and actions”.
“This happened almost three years ago and strangely nothing has been done about it. Mr. Abramovich certainly shouldn’t be able to own a football club in the country’s 152,000,000 home. And to ensure that other such persons with a Level 1 visa are not involved in illegal activities.
Abramovich is no longer a UK resident as of 2018 and withdrew his visa application after moving to Israel. The 55-year-old businessman has Israeli and Portuguese passports and rarely attends Chelsea games at Stamford Bridge, although he was in Porto for the Champions League final in May, where the Blues lifted the trophy.
