Everton 0-1 Manchester City: Fontaine steals champions
Manchester City found a tough and competitive Everton but managed to save themselves 1-0 from Goodison Park in the 81st minute with Fontaine’s golden goal and once again increased their lead over Liverpool to six points.
After the home defeat by Tottenham (2-3), the win against Everton in Liverpool in the 27th game of the Premier League was a one-way street for Manchester City, which Pep Guardiola’s team conquered with fire and iron.
Frank Lampard’s side put the champions in a difficult position thanks to their superb defensive formation, but in the 81st minute home-side keeper Keane made a fatal error and Phil Fontaine was in the right place at the right time to take advantage of it, beating near-court Pickford to score 1-0.
A result that lasted until the final, giving the Citizens their 14th win in their last 16 league games, which actually allowed them to restore their difference with 2nd Liverpool to +6, even with more games played.
The game
Everton have been flirting with relegation this season and are now looking for points or points in every game, which they did on Saturday night against Manchester City from whom they tallyed nine straight defeats in all competitions regardless of home.
In fact, the game was perfectly balanced in the first part as each team had 4 finals, one of which was at home, with the hosts having the best phase in 31′ when the ball from Kenny’s shot went through the large area.
However, as the game progressed, the champions got closer and closer to the opposition’s penalty area and in the 56th minute Pickford had to make a double operation, first a Fontaine shot and then Cancello.
In the 68th minute, the Bonbons goalkeeper lowered the reels again and did so in a phase of significantly greater difficulty, after first throwing De Bruyne’s powerful defensive drive into the left corner and, while getting up, taking a new powerful shot from Bernardo Silva into the box.
These stages boosted the morale of the hosts on the pitch and in the stands, but in 81′ it was City’s turn to raise the decibels. Bernardo Silva spun from the left and Keane failed to follow the ball in what seemed an easy stage while Fontaine lurked and took the ball to beat Pickford (0-1).
In the sequel, Lampard’s players battled to a draw and Guardiola’s players held the three, with an -extended- hand from Ruben Dias giving the hosts momentary hope, but the referee didn’t blow the whistle (the phase was controlled via V but without shouting at him see the phase on the monitor) and so the champion leaves Liverpool with a clear victory in the economy of the title.
