Van Dijk was “abused” by the English Football Association for his sending off against Newcastle.
The red card he picked up against Newcastle will force Virgil van Dijk to miss Liverpool’s game against Wolves, and the English Football Association also heavily fined him for his “French” towards the referee.
Liverpool caused a big surprise in the third game of the Premier League with a 2-1 win against Newcastle despite being behind in numbers for an hour, but this game brings back fond memories for more than just the Reds.
And that’s because there was the period of Van Dijk’s dismissal that sparked a storm of protest, as the Dutch centre-back was immediately shown red for a foul on Isak and headed to the dressing room early during his violent tantrum towards referee John Brooks those who did not do so remain unpunished.
Van Dijk missed last Sunday’s game against Aston Villa due to suspension, but that won’t be the only game he will miss this season. The FA announced on Friday (8/9) that it had imposed an additional penalty of one game for September 16 game against Wolves in “Molino”.
In addition, the Dutchman will be fined 116,000 euros for his behavior and Jürgen Klopp will now have to find other solutions in central defense for his team’s upcoming league game.
