The Premier League has decided to end the mandatory twice-weekly molecular tests on players and staff of the 20 clubs and now the tests are being carried out quickly.

The Premier League has informed the clubs that they no longer have to undergo molecular tests for the coronavirus twice a week for their players and employees.

From Thursday the tests will be carried out by rapid tests and in the event of a positive result only then will a PCR test be carried out to confirm the case.

Rapid tests are carried out on training days and the day before match days, following the recent abolition of the duty to check on match days.

Players, coaches and staff can carry out PCR checks, but this is not the responsibility of the clubs.

The Premier League announced on Monday that between December 27 and January 2, 14,250 Covid-19 tests were carried out on players and staff, with 94 results being positive. A week earlier, 103 positive cases had been recorded, making it the first week in two months that cases have decreased. Still, 17 league games have been postponed since early December due to the effects of the Omicron mutation in the UK.
