Burnley 0-1 Manchester United: Escape from Turf Moor with Fernandes’ goal
Manchester United were hoping for a mild win at Turf Moor to end the negative streak, and they found it: Fernandes secured a 1-0 win for the Red Devils against Burnley with a fantastic goal.
Manchester United traveled to Burnley with three consecutive defeats against Arsenal, Brighton and Bayern as a (heavy and unbearable) burden, but the final clash with the Clarets brought a smile to their faces. Although they didn’t want to with their performance, they found the victory they so desperately needed with Bruno Fernandes’ world-class goal in the 45th minute and came away with an important three points in terms of content and psychology.
This was only the second game since the start of the season in which they kept a clean sheet (as well as their home opener against Wolves), with captain Fernandes boasting that he had either scored or scored against 22 of the 24 teams he played have competed against each other in the Premier League (with the exception of Sheffield and Norwich).
The match
Burnley came into the game stronger and caused Manchester United some discomfort in the first 20 minutes, going close to goal twice.
Abdouni was the star player, with Onana making a tough save to keep out his header in the 10th minute, and seven minutes later, after a great vertical pass from Ramsey, the Swiss stood in front of the Cameroon goalkeeper and sent the ball into the left post with his diagonal setup .
Ten Hach’s men (starting with Evans, Regillon and Mejbri) had their own good moments before the half hour mark when Evans headed home from a Regillon corner, but the goal was blocked from the moment the exposed Hoylund came into view The Trafford goalkeeper no longer counted (the referee saw the phase on the monitor).
In the first 35 minutes the home team had 62% possession and continued to look better, playing rationally and winning most possessions, but in the 45th minute it was Bruno Fernandes’ class that did United’s favor.
Evans tried to throw a 35-yard ball into the back of the Burnley defense and the Portuguese moved vertically to find the ball without it touching the ground, making it 0-1 with a stunning diagonal shot. Compensation.
This goal not only sent the two teams into the dressing room with completely different emotions, but also influenced the development of the game in the second half, with Vincent Kompany’s players having mood and intensity, but no imagination and ideas in their game, whereby United defended their lead without Onana having to work hard.
Rashford and Fernandes could have scored a second goal for United to add more sparkle to their win, but that was still particularly important – even at 1-0 – given the wounds left by three defeats in the first five games were, a little milder Premier League games.
