Arsenal 5-0 Sheffield United: Nketiah completes historic hat-trick
Eddy Nketiah scored his first Premier League hat-trick for Arsenal, leading Mikel Arteta’s side to a comfortable 5-0 win over Sheffield United at the Emirates, moving them to within -2 of league leaders Tottenham.
After losing two points in the away derby against Chelsea last week (2-2) and Tottenham’s two subsequent wins (mini-London derbies against Fulham and Crystal Palace), it was urgent for Arsenal to build on the success in the game against Sheffield on Saturday afternoon (October 28) and he did it in style.
Eddie Nketiah was ‘responsible’ for this, celebrating his first Premier League hat-trick in the Gunners’ jersey (second overall), with Fabio Vieira converting a penalty in the 88th minute and Tomiyasu adding the icing on the cake with 90+6′, to to seal the Gunners’ 7th win in their first 10 games (they also have 3 draws).
What’s even impressive is that Arsenal were able to extend their unbeaten home streak in the Premier League against new teams to 37 games, with a record of 32 wins and 5 draws during this time.
The match
The first half was at a very slow pace and Arsenal only had five finals against a defensive-minded Sheffield, three of which were on goal and Arteta’s side took the lead in the 28th minute with Enketia coming from an advantageous position.
The 24-year-old English striker was in excellent form and showed it in the first quarter of the second half, making it 2-0 with a powerful shot from the top of the small penalty area in the 50th minute and in the 58th minute He made it 3-0 with an unimaginable volley from outside the penalty area and celebrated the first hat-trick of his Premier League career in an Arsenal jersey.
The game was locked down early on for the Gunners and Arteta made changes to give his players a breather, with two of the new signings finding their way into the net.
In the 88th minute, Vieira scored four goals for his team with the white ball (he won the penalty himself, in a phase in which the referee consulted the VAR and saw the attack on the monitor) and in the 90+6 minute the final score was 5-0 through Tomiyasu, with Arsenal coasting to a win (13 finals, 8 on goal, 67% possession) and Sheffield justifying their…worst position (only 2 finals, none at home) and you know the 9th. Lost in the first 10 games.
The only gain for Sheffield was essentially the return of Jord Baldock after almost two months out due to injury (substituted in the 71st minute), with the international right-back making his first appearance for the Blades since September 2nd.
