Danny Drinkwater, who was released by Chelsea in the summer of 2022, announced on Monday (October 30) that he is retiring from football at the age of 33.

English midfielder Danny Drinkwater announced the end of his careerspeaks on the podcast “The High Performance”.

The 33-year-old has decided to quit football and will be free from summer 2022 his contract with Chelsea has expired.

Drinkwater started in United’s academies but never broke into the first team. He has previously worn the jerseys of Leicester, Watford, Aston Villa and Cardiff and also played in Turkey with Kasimbasa.

During his career he won the FA Cup with the Londoners, with whom he played in 23 games and scored one goal.

“It’s taken a long time, but I think it’s now time to officially announce that I’m retiring from professional football.”

I didn’t think it would bother me, but saying it is almost like scratching the wound. I think I was ready for it, I didn’t stop at the peak of my career and I had matured a bit, so that made the transition easier.

I think I was in limbo for too long, either wanting to play but not having the opportunity to play at a level where I felt valued.

I just thought I’m worried here for no reason, I’m glad I don’t play football but I’m glad I play football. This is all I knew, it had been my life since I was six or seven, it was never going to be easy.

I think the way it went definitely helped. If I played every week and had to stop due to injury or age, I think it would be more difficult.

I had several offers from Championship clubs but I never felt the capsule, it didn’t feel right to me.” he explained.
