Rebecca Welch makes history against Manchester United in Fulham
Rebecca Welch will write a special chapter in English football by becoming the first female referee to take part in a Premier League match.
Rebecca Welch began refereeing matches in 2010 and nine years later she achieved a major milestone when she became the first woman to referee a professional match in England, officiating a League Two game between Harrogate Town and Port Vale.
The succession was even more impressive as she officiated three Women’s World Cup games in 2020, while she has already officiated seven English Professional League games this season.
However, the best for her is yet to come, but it is expected to come in a few 24 hours when the English Football Association announces that the 39-year-old will be the fourth official at Fulham’s game against Manchester United next Saturday 11th matchday of the Premier League.
This means she will be the first female referee to take part in a match in England’s top flight, showing other female referees that they can perform at such a high level.
