Arteta: “I don’t regret my VAR outburst, it’s my duty to defend Arsenal”
Arsenal’s complaints about the game against Newcastle have shown no sign of abating and Mikel Arteta made it clear he will continue to call VAR fouls to defend his players’ rights.
The first defeat in this year’s Premier League really upset the Arsenal people, and the reason for that is not the loss of the three points, but the way they came about. According to the Londoners, Gordon’s winning goal should not have counted (the move was checked by VAR for three separate violations before being declared 1-0). Mikel Arteta called it a disgraceful decision and management publicly stated that it supported his view.
In fact, three days after this episodic and much-discussed match, the Spaniard began a second round of confrontation with the people of the English Federation and the referee, stressing that he felt obliged to defend his team after seeing such an unfair decision.
“My job is to sit in front of the cameras and give a clear and honest assessment of what happened in the game. And that’s what I did, I expressed what I thought of my team’s performance and the fact that the game was influenced by certain decisions.
My duty is to defend my players, support the club, protect my people as best as possible and that’s exactly what I do.”emphasized the Spanish coach, adding meaningfully:
“I always do and I take responsibility for it. I have to stand up for my club smell bad.
If you have a problem, you should talk about it and try to improve the situation. That’s what we’re trying to do and nothing more.”
