Carragher: “Emery is the third best coach in the Premier League”
Aston Villa’s excellent run this season is largely due to Unai Emery, with Jamie Carragher tipping his hat to him as the Premier League’s third-best coach behind Guardiola and Klopp.
Manchester City are once again the staunch favorites to win the title this year, it will be their fourth in a row and sixth in the last seven years, however Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham are level, giving this year’s Premier League a particular interest.
But behind these teams there is one more thing that makes the English top flight interesting and that is Aston Villa, which is in 5th place and just a stone’s throw from leaders City (3 points), but also +4 from 6th Manchester United is removed.
According to Jamie Carragher, his move shouldn’t be that surprising given that his bench includes an accomplished technician like Unai Emery, who knows how to build teams and also win titles.
“Emery comes into the conversation as the third best coach in the league. Guardiola and Klopp, who won the Champions League, are probably in the top two places.”
But then you also see the work that Emery has done, not just at Aston Villa, constantly winning the Europa League. Mikel Arteta and Mauricio Pochettino don’t have the trophy CV.” emphasized the experienced Liverpool full-back and current TV commentator and added:
“If you look at the last 12 months since Emery took over at Villa and look at Manchester United, you would without a doubt agree that Aston Villa are a better team than United.”
Villa’s problem is how they will logically progress in Europe given the coach’s abilities. I see them doing well in the Conference League, so they will play a lot on Thursdays and then Sundays in the second half of the season.
Conversely, there is a significant chance that Manchester United and Newcastle will not even play in Europe in the second half of the season. They will likely finish last in their Champions League groups and not even make it to the European Championships. That will play a role.”
It is noted that Aston Villa won 14 home Premier League games in the 2023 calendar year, as many as in the previous two years, while they recorded 13 consecutive Premier League wins, which is their longest winning streak in the Premier League represents the top division since October 1983.
