Guardiola had the worst night of his career at Villa Park with a series of negative records

Manchester City produced one of their worst performances of Pep Guardiola’s tenure at Villa Park, with the Catalan coach racking up a string of negative records against Aston Villa.

Manchester City were beaten 1-0 by Aston Villa at Villa Park, a rather unfair result for Unai Emery’s side who put in one of their best performances of the season, while the Citizens suffered one of their worst performances since Pep lost their technical lead take over. The night was disastrous for him too, as a number of negative records were “marked” in his coaching career.

The European champions (and the English champions) have only been in the final twice, Villa are 22. The home team’s threat rating was 2.04 xGoals, while City was at 0.83 xGoals, with the last two teams finishing with one goal. Just four months ago he had fewer finals, in the game against Arsenal where he only “wrote” four.

Guardiola has coached 535 times in the top five leagues (he coached Barcelona and Bayern). The last two attempts were the fewest his team conceded in his entire career, while City’s 22 shots conceded equaled his all-time record.

Villa had a total of 13 ends in Ederson’s frame in the first 45 minutes. This is the most finals he has conceded in all these 535 games.

Guardiola’s third negative record (luckily for him) only concerned the games he played against City in the Premier League. Aston Villa stole the ball 13 times in attack, something no Premier League team has ever managed to beat Guardiola’s City.

It was rather a nightmarish evening, even though there were only three points at stake in the league. It’s up to the champions to prove that this particular performance was just a negative performance.
