English Football Referees Committee: “We were wrong, VAR should have judged Edgard’s hand as a penalty”
The PGMOL (English Football Referees Committee) admitted that Edgard’s hand made a mistake in Liverpool’s game against Arsenal and will carry out an investigation to determine why the club did not incorrectly award the penalty.
The derby between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield ended in a draw (1-1), but the focus of interest was this game the phase with that Hand of Edgard in Arsenal – Liverpool, who was not awarded a penalty.
PGMOL (English Football Referees Committee) admits in a statement that an error was made at this stage and that the final penalties should have been awarded in favor of Jürgen Klopp’s team, and announced an investigation to explain why the referee and (mainly) the VAR have done this I will not whistle the penalty.
In detail, the PGMOL statement says: “PGMOL admits a serious human error occurred in the first half of the match between Liverpool and Arsenal.
Martin Edgard’s hand was misjudged by the on-field refereeing team, which did not appear to be a clear error at the time, so VAR did not intervene.
In hindsight this was a clear and obvious error and should have resulted in a penalty with VAR intervention, however VAR did not intervene.
PGMOL will conduct a full investigation into the circumstances in which the error occurred. PGMOL will contact Liverpool immediately upon completion of the investigation and confirm the error“.
