Milivojevic, the 4 million euros a year, Olympiakos and the Premier League
Dimitris Christofidellis analyzes the possibility of Luka Milivojevic’s return to Olympiakos. The channel of communication that always existed, the high contract that complicates his case and the open points that the “red-whites” must close before confronting the Serb.
In England, Luka Milivojevic has often been closely linked with Olympiacos lately. The Serbia central midfielder has a contract with Crystal Palace until June 2023, but the UK are leaving open the possibility of leaving in the summer and claim he would be positive about the possibility of his return to the Piraeus team.
Olympiacos sold Milivojevic to the English team for €15,100,000 in January 2017 but there was never a channel of communication between the Red-Whites and the veteran footballer. Luca, now 31, despite being captain at Crystal Palace, sees he is not getting the participation time he would like during Patrick Vieira’s tenure on the bench. The Frenchman has diversified the squad’s line-up and playing style, which has affected the player who has made just 15 appearances in the Premier League and another 5 in the Cup this season.
The Fall and Time for Change
Some on the island believe the time has come for a change in Milivojevic’s environment, but for the time being no decision has been made, nor is there anything concrete. The Serbia central midfielder has a hefty contract with the Eagles as he is paid £80,000 a week (€93,800) meaning he has an annual salary of €4,000,000 and that is an issue.
And here a number of questions arise: will Milivojevic leave such a big deal given the opportunity to cash it out with Crystal Palace? Will he manage to find that amount at another club? Will this club be in England or in another European country? Will he add water to his wine to become a leader on another team? These are questions that are currently not easy to answer.
According to reports from England, Crystal Palace are not against the possibility of selling the Serbian footballer and want another £3,000,000 (€3,500,000) while there are those who put the amount at £3,500,000 and at £4,000,000 (4,100,000 and 4,700,000) increase euros respectively). Of course there are some who believe that the player can leave with half the money. For the quality and value of the former red and white medium and the age at which it was found, the quantity does not seem excessive.
Each case is unique
As for Olympiacos, it’s clear that Milivojevic will have to forget about his salary at the England team and fall below half the money if he wants to return to the Red-Whites. We must not forget that Arabi (2,000,000) was the biggest contract in the Piraeus team last season.
Some will say that Manolas also had high salaries at Napoli (€4,000,000 a year) but he ended up at Olympiakos with less than half the money as he wanted to return to Greece. But not all cases are the same. Each case is unique and influenced by many situations. Added to this is the scenario that does not rule out Milivojevic remaining in the Premier League.
In any case, it will take patience to see the moods of both sides and whether there is any ground for a rapprochement. At the moment, the Olympiakos people have to solve some other issues before they can proceed with strengthening the squad.
