Napoli made a statement of intent at the San Siro with a 2-1 win over AC Milan on Matchday 7 of Serie A and caught Atalanta at the top of the table.

The San Siro winner would catch up with Serie A leaders Atalanta after 7 games. Milan were better for most of the game but Napoli were the more serious side and they got through 2-1 confirming their intentions for this season.

The Partenopei started the first half sluggishly, with the Rossoneri having chances, especially with Olivier Giroud. Shouldering the burden of Rafael Leao’s absence, the France forward attempted to score but failed on three attempts. For the most part, he was beaten by both Alex Merrett and The Beam.

Napoli had some dangerous moments but they were cleared by Mike Menian and the second half promised to be exciting.

Stefano Pioli threw in Serginho Dest and Pierre Kallou and… he paid. The American full-back conceded a penalty in the 55th minute and Matteo Politano converted it to make it 1-0. The goal had a psychological impact on the hosts, who couldn’t create stages with the same ease compared to the 1st half.

In one of those rare good moments, Giroud made it 1-1 and raised hopes, but another change in the 78th minute played a crucial role in the game. Giovani Simeone scored the lead in the 78th minute for the ‘partenopei’ (which they later retained despite Kalulus post) who not only went unbeaten for the season but also caught up with the league’s other unbeaten club, Atalanta, at the top.
