Angry Mourinho: ‘If we be clowns and dive into the pool’

Jose Mourinho has commented on the referee’s decision not to award Roma a penalty for bringing down Niccolò Zaniolo, stressing that he will suggest his players “dive” on the pitch if that’s the only way to get one to get a penalty.

Jose Mourinho was furious with the referee’s decision not to give Roma (0-1) a penalty after Niccolo Zaniolo’s foul, who protested heavily and was sent off in the Atalanta game. His staff restrained him from entering the field.

The Portugal coach, who will miss his side’s next game at Giuseppe Meazza against Inter, commented on the penalty and claimed he may need to add diving lessons to his players’ training.

“I tried to talk to Keefi after the game. If a referee tells me it’s not a penalty if a player doesn’t go down, I have to start telling my players to go down. I asked him to tell me why.” He didn’t give the penalty but he didn’t give me a clear answer.

He said it was a matter of interpretation. But for me it’s not an interpretation, it’s a penalty and that’s it. The player can still continue the phase, and then the referee can reverse play and award a penalty.

I want to be the best coach I can be, but if we have to start fooling around and pretending to be in the pool then I’ll change our training.”said the annoyed Portuguese technician.
