Semi-automatic offside will be introduced in Serie A from January 27th
The Italian Football Federation has announced that semi-automatic offside will be available in Serie A from January 27th, match day one of the second round.
Semi-automatic offside will be introduced in Serie A from January 27, the Italian Football Federation has announced. This technology was implemented at the 2022 World Cup and the Champions League.
As reported by Italian media, this technology should be introduced in early January, however, it will start from the first matchday of the second round, which is scheduled to take place in the last week of this month.
The request for semi-automatic offside had been hotly debated in Italy, with the decision in Juventus’s clash with Salernitana sparking a storm of reactions within the Bianconeri ranks.
What exactly is semi-automatic offside?
How exactly are referees helped? As has been revealed, under the roof of each stadium where this technology is used, 12 cameras are placed to “capture” the ball, as well as 29 precision points from each player to calculate each player’s exact position on the field.
Once a decision is made, an exact replica of the phase is created in 3D animation, which is shown on both the stadium matrices and the TV receivers, so everyone – spectators and TV viewers – knows exactly what happened at each phase.
