Ochoa: “I couldn’t say no to Serie A, proud to play against champions”
Guillermo Ochoa has claimed he chose Salernitana because of the Italian club’s project, despite offers from other clubs, and has expressed his eagerness to play against great strikers.
With five World Cup appearances, Guillermo Ochoa is considered a legend in Mexico but his motivation is still high and he proved it with his decision to move to Europe at the age of 37.
He did so through an offer from Salernitana, with Ochoa signing a contract until the end of the season (with an option to extend it for another year) and expressing his excitement during his presentation on Thursday (12/29).
“When the opportunity presented itself to move to Serie A, I couldn’t turn it down. Sporting director Morgan De Sanctis explained to me that Salernitana has a long-term plan and I decided to get involved.
I had other proposals to continue in other countries and leagues, but after the World Cup I felt the need to marry an ambitious and interesting project
I know the Salernitana stand is reminiscent of Mexicans and those coming from South America need to connect with the world.” Ochoa first explained before making the following comments on the Italian league:
“In Mexico we’ve always followed Serie A, it’s a separate league at a high level. There are historic teams that I faced in the era of Batistuta at Roma and Ronaldo and Pirlo at Juventus.
I respect everyone but I fear no one. Of course we’re in Serie A and there are strikers with great qualities. We start our duties in 2023 with Milan having Giroud and Leo in attack.
Inter have Lautaro Martinez, I also know Milik from Juventus. I can’t mention Losano who is my teammate in the Mexico national team. I’m proud to be able to compete with their teams against champions.”
