Inter won their first Derby della Madonnina after four tries at Serie A level and with a 1-0 win by first-choice goalscorer Lautaro Martinez they continued their pursuit of Napoli and dropped AC Milan from the top four.

The Derby della Madonnina has been axed blue after Inter’s fourth attempt in Serie A and perhaps at the most opportune time. The 1-0 through the goal of its permanent goalscorer Lautaro Martinez, on the one hand they keep themselves with minimal chances of the Scudetto in the hunt for Napoli, on the other hand they push Milan out of the top 4 and far behind their big rival.

The two teams lined up with the same formation after Stefano Pioli decided to use three stoppers and skip Rafael Leao. The shock of this change hit the “rosoneri” after the hosts (dressed in “Giuseppe Meazza”) stormed in the first part.

Martinez was behind most of Inter’s executions, with Tsiprian Tatarousanou making an impressive save in the opening minutes, but in the 34th minute neither he nor Simon Kjaer were able to stop the Argentinian striker from a corner. It was 1-0 with his seventh goal in nine games since the 2022 World Cup.

Eliminating midfielder Junior Mesias, Pioli brought on Brahim Diath, followed shortly by Davide Calabria and Divock Origi (he only touched the ball 14 times) and brought on Alexis Salemakers and Rafael Leao to make it 4-3, giving his team more breadth.

Inter were slow to adapt to the new conditions and the game leveled out with Milan scoring their first accurate endgame midway through the 2nd half. But Simone Inzaghi’s moves played a key role in turning the game back into the blue. Romelu Lukaku, Robin Goesns and Marcelo Brozovic give Inter the lead again.

Lukaku and Martines each sent the ball into the net once in the final minutes, but the goals didn’t count due to an offensive foul or a millimeter offside. This did not stop the cheering in the stands and on the pitch, as Inter slipped down to second place.
