Mourinho: ‘I didn’t need extra pressure, that’s why I didn’t let Pellegrini take the penalty’
Jose Mourinho explained after Roma’s 3-0 win over Udinese that the reason he didn’t let Pellegrini take the penalty was because he didn’t need any more pressure at the time.
With Bove, Pellegrini and Abraham hitting the net and Patricio even saving a penalty, Roma triumphed 3-0 over Udinese and jumped into the new Champions League by climbing to sole 3rd place.
The Giallorossi won a penalty that Pellegrini missed but Jose Mourinho instructed Cristante to take it. Bove opened the opening goal in the 37th minute by deflecting the missed penalty to make it 1-0.
The Roma captain missed a penalty against Feyenoord in midweek, with the Portuguese coach explaining his decision.
“The result might indicate that the game was easy but honestly I didn’t like it at all until the third goal came. Even when Rui saved the penalty, Udinese pushed us into our penalty area, we reduced the pressure and then that happened feeling tired.
3-0 doesn’t reflect how I was on the bench,” said the Portuguese, then commented on his decision to let Cristade take the penalty:
“We needed the win to play without Pellegrini having the pressure on his shoulders because he missed a penalty or because his previous performances weren’t fantastic. He has my trust.
The decision not to let him perform was simply because I didn’t need the extra pressure.
In fact, I told him if there was a penalty to make it 2-0, it was his, but if it was crucial, today wasn’t the day.”the special finished.
